In1972 we wanted a canal cruiser but knew nothing about what we should or should not buy.  The Microplus of the period lookd good but was too small, then I saw the Vanguard Spectre which looked similar and for £650 we bought it from Mrs. Curtis at Vanguard Boats in Frome.   Assisted by Mike Powell we installed a marinated Ford 100E side valve engine and an Ocean outdrive.   This was extremely unreliable and we subsequently removed the engine and drive and fitted a 5hp Archimedes Penta outboard motor
