Richard Conway

b.1891

In a parallel universe to the Shaw family was Hugh’s cousin Richard Conway who was also born at Connah’s Quay and always referred to as “Cousin Richard”.  Richard Conway also spent his life at sea but whereas Hugh scrabbles around the coasts in worn out craft facing danger at every turn. Richard becomes a White Star Captain in luxury liners with affluent passengers and exotic destinations.  Richard then transfers to Cunard where he becomes a Staff Captain and First Officer.

Richard would visit Clapsgate whenever possible, imaculately dressed  in full uniform with rings of gold braid on the sleeve and a white cap.   In Clapsgate attic was a very large model of one of the Cunard Queen Liners  which must have been made for a travel agent but got to Arlinghan first.

In 1950 Richard was Staff Captain on RMS Caronia
